“The Fire Within” brings a dragon tale to life

Hello friends!

I just finished another book. The Fire Within is a books that sparks arguments between readers. But that’s not a bad thing! The biggest question most readers ask is, “Is this a story about dragons or squirrels?”

The Story

David Rain is a college student who rents a room from Liz Pennykettle and her 11-year-old daughter Lucy. The moment he steps through the door for the first time he knows he’s entered into a strange house that holds a magical secret. You see, the Pennykettles aren’t aren’t your ordinary family. They’re dragon guardians!

There isn’t a room in the house that doesn’t have at least one dragon in it. To a normal person, the dragons are just clay, but David suspects they’re real dragons hiding in plain sight. He’s a smart human, really. One of the rules for us dragons is we can be seen but not heard, unless the human is a friend of dragons, like Merlin the wizard.

Dragons may be uncommon for someone like David, they’re just part of everyday life for Lucy (but that doesn’t mean they aren’t special). The creatures that capture her heart the most are squirrels. But, thanks to a neighbor who thinks they’re nothing more than pests, all the squirrels have left Wayward Crescent. All except for one: Conker, a small gray squirrel with one bad eye who wasn’t able to escape with the others.

That’s where Gadzooks, a very special dragon, comes in. David and Lucy will his help (and the help of some others) if they want to help Conker get to safety.  But that is only the beginning!

About the Series

One of the things I love the most about this story is that the dragons look a lot like me. They aren’t scary and they don’t eat humans. (By the way, dragons eating humans would be like humans eating unicorns. You just don’t do it.)

Anyway, like I said earlier, The Fire Within is the first in The Last Dragon Chronicles by Chris D’Lacy. It was published in 2001 and the series was completed in 2012. If you like dragons, cats, and a animals in general, this is the series for you. The chapters are short and easy enough for my 7-year-old cousin to read with a little help. I give this book 3.5 dark chocolate eggs.

The Fire Within is 340 pages and is a good chapter book for bedtime reading. It’s a story that encourages imagination and inspires readers to create a story of their own! Mom or dad can find it at Barnes & Noble, Amazon, and on iBooks. Don’t forget to check your local library!

Oh! Let me know what you think this story is about: Dragons or Squirrels.
